Over the past 4 years I have been experimenting with all kinds of different concaves and rockers for my high performance boards. I’ve gone from super deep to slight concaves, and boards that have a ton of rocker to boards that have more relaxed rockers. I’m always searching for a perfect match between these two elements of surfboard design. I believe these two things make a board work amazing or absolutely horrible. I was stuck in a period where all I was doing was deep concaves and it seemed that was where everybody was headed and most of our customers where asking for it. I was making myself these designs and kept feeling the boards to be very inconsistent.

This week I thought I’d share some of the Collective boards that I’ve done art on over the past 6 years. I got introduced to drawing at an early age by my father, and in 9th grade I really started getting into graffiti art. I had a crew of friends and that’s all we would do in class. We would practice our throw ups, pieces, and tags. I was heavily involved in the graffiti scene in North County San Diego for the years after. When we formed Chemistry in 2002 it was natural to morph these two lifestyles together. Here are a few boards from the archives. Hope you enjoy.

This was a beat I made for a part in the 5th Symphony Document for Jeremy Heit and myself. I produced it at my old apartment in Oceanside back in 2001. Chad Campbell the director of the movie wanted something unique for our part and asked if I could come up with something for the soundtrack. This was what I came up with, it’s one of the first beats I ever made and it’s a little rough. I thought I would share it with you all anyway. Chad and Andy did a great job with the movie, it went on to win Surfer Magazine video of the year.

One of the most important areas in designing a board is the bottom rocker. You can compare rocker to an engine in a car. They help you gain speed, maneuver up and down , blow tail, do airs, etc. I’m always trying to perfect the bottom curve. There is a fine line of too much or not enough. All depending in what kind of waves the board was designed for will determine how much rocker is in the board. I use a few different tools to measure rocker, these tools help me match previous boards that worked well for the individual.
There are so many differentt tools that go into building a board. Over the years I have collected a ton. It seems like you can always find a better way to finish a board. Ether I’m going to Home depot or making a custom block out of foam with some old sponge. It’s funny because I seem to never get rid of the old ones, they keep pilling up in the corner of my room. I feel maybe one day I will go back to them. Anyway all these little tools have help me fine tune my boards to where they are now. Most these tools are not worth over 5 dollars but there priceless to me.

Heres a first glimpse at Raekwons upcoming fifth-studio album titled, Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang. The song is called “Butter Knives†and as you will hear it sounds like some ’90′s ish. The project is currently slated for a March 2011 drop, with presumably more drops underway.

Last weekend I had the honor to compete in the Tribute to the Masters Shape-Off honoring Simon Anderson. The other shapers in the shape-off were Pat Rawson, Brian Bulkley, Michael Baron, Larry Mable and Matt Biolis. When I was asked to be a part of this I was a little unsure how the whole event would unfold.

This is dope. He’s got the RZA shouting him out. He is probably too young to know the impact the RZA and WU TANG had on a teen growing up in the 90′s. One of my favorite artists of all time.

Jason Bennett working to improve his surfboard shapes through extensive testing of the Alchemist Remix. This is footage from the last few weeks at Oceanside Pier. It has been convenient that the Pier has had a nice little sandbar for a few weeks and the weather has been prime. Jason tests his custom shaped 5’10 x 19 1/4 x 2 3/8 Remix model.
All footage and editing by Russell Spencer.
Beats by Jason Bennett.
