An excerpt from the World Surf League's recap of the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach...
The youngest competitor in the event, Barron Mamiya, 17, earned the Vans Triple Crown Rookie Award by besting a field of 18 others and has had an incredibly successful year after winning multiple regional Pro Junior events, the WSL Hawaii/Tahiti Nui Regional Junior Champion, qualification into the World Junior Championship and now today's accomplishment.
"I'm stoked, I didn't even think I was going to win this award because I did really bad at Haleiwa, but I guess I made up for it here at Sunset," said Mamiya atop the podium post-Final. "I'm stoked to win it and hopefully I can keep the momentum going until next year."
Mamiya was the highest placing Hawaii athlete in the Vans World Cup and bowed out in the Semifinal after Andino narrowly beat him 13.63 to Mamiya's 12.04.

As the summer season winds down and kids start going back to school, we look forward to fall as it rapidly approaches. This is one of our favorite times of the year as both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres bless us with swells making ideal conditions for our local beach breaks. The weather slowly changes and the still mornings of summer make way for the crisp, offshore air of fall. The wide tail, flat rocker boards we have been riding most of the summer transition to narrow squash and round tails better suited for hollower surf. You can dust off your Chem Zenagains as you will most likely be riding a board like this over the next few months.
Chemistry would like to offer you the chance to get a great deal on a board you will be riding this fall and into winter at a great price. Take $50 off our stock & used boards, also take $50 off all customs ordered at our factory in Oceanside. All traction, Chem tees, and leashes are 15% off, use the discount code friendsofchem for all accessories and soft goods. Take advantage of these deals from now until Labor Day 9/4!
