Project 1992

Saturday, June 28th | 4PM-9PM | 602 S. Tremont St, Oceanside, CA

At Chemistry Surfboards, we believe that some moments in time are so powerful they continue to shape us decades later. Project 1992 is our tribute to one of those defining moments—a cultural paradigm shift in surf, art, and music that happened worldwide back in 1992.

The Story Behind Project 1992

The inspiration for Project 1992 began with Thes One from People Under the Stairs, who approached us with an idea rooted in the hip hop music revolution of 1992. When Thes One brought this concept to Chemistry Surfboards, Jason and Will immediately connected with the vision and knew they could bring something special to it. 1992 was a pivotal year that marked major cultural shifts across multiple scenes—from the golden era of hip hop to the emergence of grunge rock, the music landscape was transforming. Simultaneously, surfing was experiencing its own revolution with the arrival of the "New School" led by Kelly Slater and the Momentum Generation, who brought a completely different approach to performance surfing. Together, we infused Thes One's hip hop inspiration with the art and surf culture elements that made 1992 such a transformative year, creating this incredible celebration that honors all aspects of that cultural paradigm shift.

The Video Contest: Bringing 1992 Back to Life

Understanding surfboard bottom contours is crucial for choosing the perfect custom surfboard. In Episode 3 of "If You Don't Know Now You Know," expert surfboard shaper Jason Bennett from Chemistry Surfboards breaks down how different bottom contours affect your board's performance in various wave conditions.

Types of Surfboard Bottom Contours

Every surfboard bottom contour serves a specific purpose in board design. Here are the four main types of surfboard bottom contours and how they impact your surfing experience:

Flat Bottom Surfboards

  • Flat Bottom Design: Provides maximum stability and speed for beginners and longboard riders
  • Best for: Small waves, cruising, and learning fundamental surfing techniques

Concave Bottom Surfboards

  • Concave Bottom Contours: Enhance lift and maneuverability by channeling water flow
  • Best for: Performance surfing, generating speed, and responsive turning

Vee Bottom Surfboards

  • Vee Bottom Design: Increases control and bite for smoother rail-to-rail transitions
  • Best for: Larger waves, stability at speed, and easier turning

Channel Bottom Systems

  • Channel Bottom Contours: Direct water flow and increase hold for maximum control
  • Best for: Powerful waves, maintaining speed, and enhanced grip

How Bottom Contours Affect Surfboard Performance

The bottom contour of your surfboard significantly influences three key performance factors:

  • Speed: Flat and concave designs maximize speed generation
